FASHION DESIGN CURRICULUM (1-YEAR PROGRAMME)
PROGRAM OVERVIEW:
This Fashion Design Curriculum is structured to provide comprehensive education in fashion design, focusing on building both creative and technical skills. It is designed for aspiring designers to develop the ability to design, create, and launch their fashion collections while gaining an understanding of the business aspects of the fashion industry.
PROGRAM GOALS:
• Technical Mastery: To build professional-grade technical skills in sewing and pattern making.
• Creative Excellence: To develop original design capabilities and sharp analytical thinking.
• Entrepreneurial Success: To create self-sufficient fashion entrepreneurs.
• Career Readiness: To produce job-ready designers capable of starting a brand or working within the global fashion industry.
FOUNDATIONS (2 MONTHS):
1. Introduction to Fashion Design & Tailoring
2. Sewing Fundamentals: Tools, instruments, terminology, machine operations (components, treadle operation, threading, lubrication, overhauling, needle/belt replacement)
3. Measurements & Pre-construction: Standard body measurement techniques, distance calculation, ease allowance, garment component identification, pattern identification principles
TECHNICAL SKILLS (3 MONTHS):
1. Design Principles & Illustration: Color theory, selection strategies, figure drawing
2. Pattern Making & Textile Sourcing: Fabric science, drafting basic bodice blocks (Buba, Blouse, Shirt, Skirt), lower garments (Trousers, Gowns), outerwear (Jacket, Sleeve blocks), dart manipulation, Yoke construction
3. Embellishment: Stone designs (Stone board vs. freehand), Embroidery, Beadwork, Traditional Adire craft
FASHION ILLUSTRATION AND SPECIALIZATION (4 MONTHS):
1. Advanced Garment Construction: Skirts, Blouses, Trousers, Gowns, Structured Jackets, Kimonos, Lining techniques, Couture finishing, Basic Bridal gown construction, Bespoke Suit tailoring
2. Fit & Finishing: Fitting techniques, garment adjustment, quality control standardization, Men's basics (Boxers, Caps)
BUSINESS, MARKETING AND DELIVERY (2 MONTHS):
1. Delivery Branding: Working with clients and vendors
2. Fashion Business & Entrepreneurship: CAC Registration, bookkeeping, pricing/costing, client management, branding/packaging
3. Fashion Marketing: Social media strategy, Lookbook creation, Fashion Show organization
4. Capstone Project / Internship: 4-Week Internship with an established designer/tailor & Final Collection project
ASSESSMENT STRUCTURE:
• Continuous Assessment: Weekly practical assignments
• Mid-Term Tests: Theoretical and technical evaluations
• Final Examination: Comprehensive theory exam and garment construction defense
